Within a total of 700 works from 34 participating countries, 11 works of a group of students from Asia University (AU) are granted three gold, three silver, and five bronze medals at the 2019 Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF). Three works by the AU students which were awarded gold medals are as follows: 1) Portable Charger with Air Quality Sensor; 2) Storage-type Logistics Trolley with Lightweight; and 3) Communication System for Patients.

Hsin-Hung Lin, the director of the Creative Design and Invention Center at AU, pointed out that the invention, “Storage-type Logistics Trolley with Lightweight,” has reached the stage of successful commercialization before entering to the award listing of the 2019 SIIF. These awards demonstrate AU’s efforts for innovation and breakthroughs.

The Invention “Portable Charger with Air Quality Sensor” was created by Yi-Ching Li who is a student from the Department of Creative Product Design at AU. The product is a combination of a portable charger and a small air quality sensor which can help us detect PM2.5 and provide real-time city air quality maps through Google Maps. Prof. I-Tien Chu, a professor in the Department of Creative Product Design at AU, said that Google Maps not only provide traffic jam conditions on the highway to users in real time, but also combine with big data to assist the Taiwan’s government to understand air quality conditions everywhere.

The invention “Storage-type Logistics Trolley with Lightweight,” designed by Yi-An Lin and other three students from the Department of Creative Product Design at AU, uses a net structure to enhance transportation of a logistics trolley, and also makes use of plastic materials to reduce its weight. In addition, it is a foldable container. Foldable containers have the potential to solve the problem of space allocation of the logistics industry.

An-Yu Cheng, a student from the Department of Creative Product Design at AU, also won a gold medal for his medical invention “Communication System for Patients.” He and his instructor Prof. Chu observed that patients wearing oxygen masks had communication problems with weak voices. Therefore, they developed an electric induction device which receives a patient’s voice pattern and transfers it to a mobile application (APP) by connecting the oxygen masks, so that nursing workers could understand immediately what a patient said. For example, if a patient says “water,” the APP will show a water image. Even when the patient spoke with a weak voice, the message also can appear on the screen of the mobile device.

In the past nine years, AU students have participated in many international invention exhibitions in various countries and won a total of 407 medals, including 117 gold, 144 silver, 100 bronze, 41 special awards, 5 first prizes and the highest international award. All these awards mark a great winning record in the history of AU!
